The structures are factory-built andtransported to the site, allowing for controlled manufacturing, rapid setup, fixed costs, and affordable living quarters for mostly migrant agriculturalworkers. Truly affordable housing in the US today is manufactured housing. Thisis the fastest growing type of housing stock in the country, with 22 millionpeople currently living in manufactured homes. The average price of a newmanufactured home is $80,000, significantly less than other prefabricated ormodular products, largely due to the standardized permitting process by thefederal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Our research focuses on developing aprotype of manufactured housing that is efficient, modern, and sustainable, none of which exemplifies current market models.
The initial protype – entirely made inwood with metal cladding – utilizes plan variations of approximate 900 sq. ft.,2 bedroom and 2 bath units that can accommodate family use, with flexibleindoor and outdoor living space. All components, including terrace and shaderoof, are to be factory fabricated and shipped in one piece to the site.
Materials are environmentally friendlyand/or recycled with no hazardous off-gassing, and appliances and componentsenvironmentally certified. Rooftop photovoltaics and rainwater collectioncontribute to ecological site installation.
The project is currently in the prototypephase and looks forward to achieving market viability. We are interested inpartnering with interested individuals or organizations who share our goal ofdeveloping a quality modern, affordable, and sustainable product withinmanufactured housing.
